Webflix has recently been merged with the DVD rental giant LoveFilm and is no longer providing a rental service of their own. Check out LoveFilm.com for a 14 day free trial of their movie and video games rental service. |
The following review is of the now closed Webflix DVD rental service and is provided for nostalgia purposes only.
Webflix is a movie rental site created by film fans with the needs of film fans firmly in mind.
Webflix appears very much aimed at providing a full and complete service rather than the simple rent-and-run modus operandi of a typical video store. Their focus on British and World cinema is a superb example of this, providing a large selection of the best of both genres, with reviews, critiques, comparitive ratings etc. attached to make it easy to choose the right films as well as find a few gems you'd never heard of.
An equally impressive feaure is the categorisation of movies. Search for Science Fiction at other online DVD rental sites, for example, and you end up with 2000+ movies in a long alphabetical list. Webflicks however, allows you to refine this further to search for categories within the Sci-Fi genre, for example, movies featuring Androids, or just Comedy flicks with a Sci-Fi theme making browsing for exactly what you want a far more pleasant experience.
In terms of service, once again the Webflix rental service is faultless. DVDs arrive speedily and customer service enquiries are answered quickly.
On the downside, Webflix is relatively expensive when compared to their top competitors. The 3 disc package for example, is £17.95 a month at Webflix which is a real bargain compared to video shop prices but pales a little when compared to LOVE FiLM, Screen Select and others who offer the same service for under £15.00 themselves. In addition, the approx. 5000 titles these guys stock looks a little limp in comparison to the 27,000+ Screen Select can provide and most boast 10,000+ at least.
In all, Webflix offers an excellent service aimed more towards the movie buff than the average Joe, but is let down by having a smaller selection than many of their main competitors and uncompetitive pricing on the 3 disc level which is the most popular option for most users.
