If you are looking for an inexpensive video game rental company on the East coast then you'll like what Red Octane has to offer.
At $18.95 for a 3 disc package they undercut most of their competitors by a dollar or two and at $23.95 for a 3 out-at-a-time rental plan they are a whole $6 cheaper than some of the other big names in the online console game rental industry on the East coast like GameFly. If price is a factor, then Red Octane has you covered.
This lower pricing level doesn't mean you are poorly serviced in other areas however. Red Octane has over 2,500 titles to choose from and is one of the few game renters we found who stock Dreamcast games in addition to Playstation 1 and 2, GameCube, XBox and Nintendo Gamecube games.
Where Red Octane does feel a little 'lacking' when compared to some of the more publicized rental sites out there is in terms of the redoctane.com website and rental queue features. A visit to Redoctane.com is like a visit to your local video store; you see the titles in their respective categories, pick the ones you think you like the sound of and rent them, nothing more.
In this respect, when compared to some of their major competitors they are lagging a bit behind. For example, GameFly vs Red Octane is no contest for on-site features. GameFly has detailed reviews, links to professional reviews, help and hints on games, user ratings and reviews, downloads and screenshots and generally offers a slicker interface and more user-interactive experience. Whilst, arguably most gamers know where they can find all these things online (and better and more detailed) it's nice to have it in front of you when building your rental queue.
Most video game rental companies give you a free 10 day trial of the service which you will not be billed for if you choose to cancel before the trial is over. Red Octane gives you two months free...when you trade in one of your old XBox, PS2 or Gamecube games. Whilst this is arguably not a free trial as such, it's a deal worth $37 in rental fees which you wouldn't get by taking the same game off to somewhere like Gamestop...
In all, Red Octane offers a pretty solid rental service made more attractive by being that much lower in price than their competition. If you are on the East coast and budget is a concern then Red Octane should be right up there with your top choices. West coast renters should look closer to home unless you can handle the postal delays for titles arrive.
